When a trendline deserves retirement
Invalidation is not only a close beyond the line — context decides when the thesis is gone.
Many traders keep a violated line on the chart as a souvenir. The eye softens; the line becomes a memory of a trade that almost worked. Trendline discipline treats retirement as a skill.
Signals that the line is done
- A decisive close beyond the line on the timeframe that defined it, followed by a failed retest that does not reclaim the structure
- A sequence of weaker touches where reactions shrink while opposing pressure grows
- A higher-timeframe shift that makes the original anchors irrelevant
A single wick beyond the line is not always a funeral. We teach students to separate noise from a change of role. The written checklist from the intensive includes a “retire / watch / keep” column so the decision is explicit.
Emotional residue
Retiring a line can feel like admitting a loss of narrative. In evening labs we practice deleting the stroke and sitting with the empty space for thirty seconds before drawing anything new. That pause alone cuts impulsive replacement lines.
